Bio
The What
Film making is a second career, so there has been no film school. However I’ve attended numerous workshops, courses and mucked in for plenty of hands on experience.
My mindset has always been to apply myself; to a new task, a new role, a new challenge, a new job and I approached film making in exactly the same way. It has been well documented that you learn ‘by experience’ and I believe 100% that this is the best way to nurture excellent film makers.
Yes you will make mistakes along the way, however,
you master things through your experience.
K’motion Films has been set up to do exactly that, allow young talent the opportunity to get their hands dirty, roll up their sleeves and really delve into film making. Film makers are not taught they are born. They learn through experience, and then they get creative!
The When
When you say you are going to be a film director, film producer or film actor, the euphoria around that statement is welcome but short lived.
In modern times our expectations are high and our patience or tolerance is low. So some of you may have already experienced the, “haven’t you made that film yet” syndrome!
Film production occurs in five stages before it arrives on screen for your viewing pleasure. It consists of:
1. Development: The script is written and drafted into a workable blueprint for a film.
2. Pre-production: Preparations are made for the shoot, in which cast and crew are brought on board, locations are selected, and sets are built.
3. Production: The raw elements for the finished film are recorded.
4. Post-Production: The film is completed by: editing, sound production, music tracks, sound effects, special effects and then finally locked down and completed.
5. Sales and distribution: The film is screened for potential buyers and distributed reaching a cinema near you!
On a Scorsese film, this process can take three years, hence the ‘when’ is a mammoth question to answer, as not all film projects make it through these stages.
The How
I do things through collaboration for its intrinsic value. By helping other film makers I indirectly help myself as you can never know everything in the film industry.
K’motion Films actively seeks collaboration with others in the industry, especially those needing to build their experience or who are looking for a good script/production to work on.
The film industry is the ultimate people business and creating something out of nothing with a team of passionate film makers, makes me want to get up in the morning. If this sounds like you, then kmotion films can facilitate that passion.
The Ambition
We’ve all got ambition, yet some of us realise it and others don’t. What’s that all about?
To help young people achieve their ambitions I have signed up to Growing Ambitions, where you can request me as a speaker. This service is available free to schools, further education colleges and universities throughout the UK.
Growing Ambitions is an award-winning not-for-profit organisation, founded in January 2007 and headed by managing director, Sally Davis. K’motion Films is glad to secure this association and for more information on speakers head over to growing ambitions.
